Stuttgart - round 1. Fight!

It seems, with hotels at least, if it can go wrong, it will. I've never had such a struggle with a vacation before.

We left Munich on the train bound for Stuttgart at 10:30 am. We got to the train station early, so we had a coffee while waiting to board. The trains in Germany are so, *so* nice. Completely silent and very comfortable. It was an uneventful 2 hours.

We found our hotel easily enough - Hotel Mack - right next to the train station. We checked in and went up to our room to deposit our luggage before venturing out in to the city. The hotel is functional. Kind of shabby, but clean, and right next to the city center transportation. The room they gave us had two single beds instead of one double. Not the end of the world, but also not what I booked. So we went back downstairs and the desk clerl told us there were no double beds available for the second night. I said we'd take the double bed tonight. He thought that was pointless since we'd just have to move tomorrow. Then I explained that we could look for a different hotel tomorrow. "Oh! Wait! I think I *do* have something!" That's what I thought, pal. So we now have a double bed. Small victories.

We headed out towards the one vegan-friendly restaurant we found on Google - Vegi Voodoo, a falafel place. It's down at the other end of the pedestrian shopping district, so we decided to talk a stroll through the city center. There is a long pedestrian only street - Konigstrasse - that is lined with all kinds of shops. Clothes, shoes, luggage, restaurants, kitchenware - anything you could want, basically.

It's a lovely stroll and we passed a pretty little park area - Schlossplatz - and a few churches and the Stuttgart Rathaus (town hall). We found the restaurant easily and enjoyed a delicious and inexpensive late lunch/early dinner. We stopped in a shoe store and scoped out some new Birkenstocks for Autumn, but put off buying them for now. Allen may get a pair as well, since his ankle was bothering him today in his Vibrams. We'll see - I think Allen is not excited about announcing his crunchy granola status to the world via Birkenstocks. :-)

We stopped in a grocery store on the way back to the hotel. I love grocery stores and foreign grocery stores are like amusement parks. So many new things to see! Sadly, they had an entire section full of chocolate... None of them vegan. We got some mustard in a tube - the better to travel with for pretzels at the Volksfest! - and some apfelwasser. They don't really have this in the US that I know of: water with a slight flavoring, but nothing else. The flavored waters in the US all seem to have crazy stuff in it, but this is just water that happens to have a hint of apple flavor. I love it and anticipate being fully hydrated for the remainder of the trip. We also picked up a baguette and a bottle of wine to have with our olives and pickle we bought yesterday in the Viktualienmarkt.

Tomorrow: Volksfest! And, if there is time, we got a recommendation from a woman in the grocery store for a local hangout that serves wine and food typical of the region. Sounds fun!
